Sewing Machine- A sustainable Source of family Income

Mangala Vinod Parise, Chaka, Tal- Arvi, Dist-Wardha, Maharashtra

Mangala Vinod Parise, a 30 year old house wife who is resident of Chaka village, has a 5 member family including her. The other family members include her husband, son and a daughter and a mother. They have a 1 acre rain fed agriculture farming land. The land is also at a long distance from the home which makes it difficult to pay proper attention to the field requirements. This leads to the agriculture income less than expected from their land. With this income, the net profit after covering the expenses is very minimal and it’s highly difficult to cover the family expenses from this. This eventually compels the family to go for the daily wage work whatever available in the nearby areas. The continued drought for the last 3 consecutive years, led to the unavailability of the wage work in the village which further complicated the situation for the family. How to meet the expenses of the education for the children was a big question for the family.

Earning and teaching goes together
The HDFC Bank supported HRDP project under the Parivartan started in the village in the year 2015-2016 was in a way turning point for the family. HDFC Bank tasked SIED for the implementation of the HRDP project in the village. Under this programme in the village various need based activities which could change the lives of the people started in the village. These activities mainly included farm bunding for the agricultural development, trenching work, construction of cement check dams, earthen nalla bund construction, gabion, etc. All these activities together have helped in conserving soil and water and increasing the water storages above and below the surfaces. The ground water levels have also improved. To take advantages of the available water to increase the area under the irrigation in the village, sprinkler irrigation demonstrations have been done. The crop demonstrations have also been done to increase the agriculture production and to reduce the crop failure vulnerability. Under the sustainable livelihood initiatives different activities have been initiated under the project which included goat rearing, poultry, electric motor rewinding, training on sewing machine etc.
Mangala Parise, after a carefully thought about her overall family situation, chose to participate in the sewing machine training activity. A 3 month course of the sewing machine training was completed by Mangalabai with learning lot of necessary things. She learnt stitching of various cloths particularly of the ladies cloths. This could not logically lead to the sustainable source of income unless she starts the work of same. She was supported under the project and she purchased a sewing machine.
Initially she could earn Rs.50-70 per day by this work. Now the work stated well and she could easily earn Rs.150-200 per day and sometimes even Rs. 350 per day. This has reduced the financial stress of the family completely. She could now easily fulfill the financial needs of the family including the educational expense of the children. She has even started to save the money for the higher education of the children. The faces of the family members are smiling because of this and the hard work being done by the Mangala. The additional monthly income from this livelihood activity is Rs. 6000/- per month and annual additional income is likely to be not less than Rs. 72,000/-.
The HDFC Bank’s Parivratn initiate in terms of the HRDP project has really brought change in the Managala’s family. She has expressed a sincere gratitude to the HDFC Bank for the most valuable support she has received.
