Turmeric Cultivation Case Study

Introduction

        In April 2016 Sanjeevani institute for empowerment and development (SIED) has started work in Kalamb and Ralegaon tahasil of Yavatmal district with the finance of HDFC bank. the project has been started under the title of “Participatory Natural Resource Management Project in 11 villages of Ralegaon and Kalamb Block Dist Yavatmal ” from this project we run different developmental activities in project area, Agricultural demonstration is also one of the best activity to increase crop production which leads to increase farmer income and standard of leaving of a farmers.

Past Condition of farmer

        Mr. Vinod Manohar Wagh is a farmer of Aamla village Tal- Kalamb Dist- Yavatmal his main occupation is farming and he is having 9 acre of irrigated land, traditionally he is cultivating different crops like Cotton, Red gram, Soybean in Kharif and Wheat, Gram in Rabi season but because of the uncertainty in climatic condition and traditional farming total agricultural production is not up to the mark. Total income from his farm is approximately about Rs 8000/- per acre/ year from this low income he is unable to fulfill daily needs of his family hence he decided to cultivate something new than his traditional crops which gives more income than his conventional farming.


Selection of Demonstration

            Under agricultural demonstration activity SIED selected Mr. Vinod Manoharrao Wagh for Spices (Turmeric) demonstration to gives best alternative for his conventional farming with the participation of SIED to increase crop production which leads to increase farmer income and standard of leaving of farmers. . Mr. Vinod Wagh having 9 acre of irrigated farm land type is Corus sandy loam which is suitable for turmeric cultivation. turmeric has good market price and demand hence this crop can gives more income than other crops which is cultivated by Mr. Vinod and other farmers conventionally hence we selected turmeric as a crop Demo crop to the farmer. On dated 4 July 2016 that farmer had sown turmeric rhizomes in his 0.50 acres of land as a demo plot of turmeric crop.

Review of farmer about Demonstration

            My name is Vinod Manohar Wagh I am from village Aamla my occupation is farming. Farming is my only source of income me and my family is totally dependent on Agriculture. I have 9 acre of land and having good source of irrigation but my cropping pattern is conventional I’m cultivating different crops like cotton, soybean, red gram in Kharif and wheat, gram in Rabi season this traditional crops gives me less income hence I wanted to change my cropping pattern on the place of traditional crops I wanted to cultivate different crops which gives me a good income but because of financial and knowledge limitations it can not come into action but because of moral, technical and financial support of Sanjeevani institute this year I’m started to cultivate Turmeric. SIED gives me 0.50 acres Turmeric plot as a demonstration plot and they providing all technical support to do turmeric demo successful. I’m assured about the turmeric plot it will give me more income than my conventional farming. I am really thankful to Sanjeevani institute And HDFC bank for all their support and help.
